Tanzania amazes with its wide mix of wildlife, cultural richness and natural superlatives. Currently, approximately 38% of the country's territory is officially protected as national parks or protected areas. Add to that the beautiful coastline and the snow-capped Kilimanjaro in the north. Amidst this diversity are some of Africa's finest coffees with complex flavor profiles. Tanzanian coffee production is mainly located around Kilimanjaro in the north and in the southern highlands of Mbeya.
The Mbeya region in the southwest is known for its fertile soil, which thrives on fine coffee, cocoa, tea and spices. However, as a relatively remote and underdeveloped area, Mbeya has a unique feature. Coffee is grown here on high plateaus instead of on steep slopes. Growers in this area experience intense sunshine in the summer, but also heavy rains in the winter.
Farmers usually grow coffee on an average of 2 hectares. Manual and selective picking of only ripe cherries ensures the highest quality coffee. Farmers then deliver their cherry crop to so-called "central washing stations" (CPUs), small stations owned and operated by 10-80 farmers from the Isaiso AMCOS (Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Society). The cooperatives undergo regular training in the field of agronomy aimed at improving the quality of coffee and its processing.
This particular lot won a national competition organized by the Tanzanian Coffee Board.
