🌄 Tabaconas, Peru – Introduction
Tabaconas is one of seven districts in the province of San Ignacio in the Cajamarca region of northern Peru. Located close to the border with Ecuador, the area is characterized by steep terrain, misty forests and a long tradition of coffee cultivation. The altitude ranges between 1,100 and 2,400 meters above sea level, which, together with the different microclimates, creates ideal conditions for complex, high-quality Arabica.

🌱 Growers and their landscape
The production is shared by about 505 smallholder families, many with land inherited from generation to generation. For these farmers, coffee is not just a crop, but the basis of a culture and economy.
During the harvest, mingas are often held – traditional community workdays where neighbors help each other.

Farms and agricultural systems
Most farms are 2-5 hectares in size and the coffee trees grow in the shade of native trees (e.g. laurel, cedar) and fruit species (banana, avocado).
Traditional methods (hand weeding, selective collection, drying) are combined with new practices (composting, modular drying, ecological pest control).
👉 These methods contribute to a finely structured cup profile with frequent notes of citrus, cocoa or stone fruit.

Quality culture
CENFROCAFÉ rewards growers based on the quality of their lots – the rewards encourage access to better practices and stable results.

🏞️ Sustainable approach and community
Tabaconas is adjacent to the Tabaconas-Namballe National Sanctuary – a protected area with rare ecosystems (cloud forests, páramo).
Many farms operate organically even without certification – with composting, shade management and agroforestry systems.
Projects and support
The community initiative brings investments in fertilizers, fermentation vessels, drying modules and technical training – all of which increase productivity, income and coffee quality.

đź«‚ Coffee as a way of life
Local life is deeply connected to tradition – every September, celebrations of the patron saint San Miguel Arcángel are held, the rhythm of which is also influenced by the coffee community.
Even though the farms are in remote terrain and often difficult to access, the coffees produced here are a clear expression of the place and the people who grow them.
