Cocoa was only introduced to Papua New Guinea in the 20th century, when it was grown on only a few plantations. Today, it is found on smaller farms across the country and has become an important crop for the livelihood of local farmers.
More than a million farmers produce over 40,000 tonnes of cocoa beans annually. Thanks to support from within the country and abroad, PNG cocoa beans are gradually gaining more attention – both for their quality and variety of flavours.
