🌋 Region and terroir
The Menyamya region is located in Morobe Province in eastern Papua New Guinea. It's a mountainous and remote area, with an altitude between 1200 and 1700 meters above sea level, where coffee plants grow in small family gardens surrounded by lush jungle. The climate is humid, with frequent mists and even rainfall, which slows the ripening of the cherries and gives the coffee density and complexity. The soils are rich in organic matter, as the farms often border rainforests.

📜 History of Coffee in Papua New Guinea
Coffee arrived in Papua New Guinea in the 20th century – the first Arabica beans were planted in the 1920s on mission farms, and by the 1950s cultivation had spread to the mountainous regions. Cultivation took hold particularly in small "coffee gardens," where each family cultivates several hundred bushes. While large plantations dominate in other countries, in PNG coffee is almost exclusively in the hands of small-scale farmers, giving it a unique character and diversity.

🌱 Harvesting and Processing
Harvesting takes place manually between May and September, when only ripe red cherries are picked. In Menyamya, farmers peel the cherries in small village processing stations (wet mills), ferment them, and then carefully wash them. This is followed by drying on tarpaulins or African beds. Once the parchment is dry, the coffee is transported to the city of Lae, where export companies (e.g., Morobe Mountain Coffee Export Ltd.) handle the removal of the parchment, sorting, and preparation for export.
