Nestled in the lush countryside of Kenya, Kiamutuira is a testament to community farming and the rich heritage of the Kikuyu tribe. Established in 1996, this processing station is a proud part of the Mutira Cooperative Society, a cooperative that has been at the heart of Kenyan coffee production since 1951.

Kiamutuira was established to provide local farmers with a reliable coffee processing facility. Over the years, it has grown to become a symbol of quality and community, producing some of the best coffee in the region.

The station is situated in an exceptional location, bordering the magnificent Mt. Kenya forest. The proximity to this iconic natural area of Kenya enriches the farm with rich biodiversity and stunning natural scenery. The region is characterized by rolling hills and green spaces, which create an ideal environment for growing coffee and tea.

The farm benefits from a mild climate, with daytime temperatures averaging 25°C and nighttime temperatures around 15°C. This climate, combined with an average annual rainfall of 1500 mm, creates the perfect conditions for growing high-quality coffee. The soil, enriched with volcanic clay, further increases the fertility of the land and supports the growth of the farm’s main coffee varieties: SL28, SL34 and Batian.

The farm uses shade trees, especially macadamias, to protect the coffee plants from excessive sunlight and maintain soil health. This not only helps produce better coffee, but also ensures a sustainable farming system.

The heart of Kiamutuira is its people. The cooperative is made up of 600 farmers, each farming an average of 0.1 hectare. Notably, the membership includes more women than men, highlighting the key role women play in the community’s agricultural success. The majority of the farmers are from the Kikuyu ethnic group, a community known for its rich cultural heritage and agricultural skills. The Kikuyu language and cultural practices give the cooperative a unique identity that strengthens a sense of belonging and mutual support among members.

Although coffee is the main crop, tea, another important crop in the region, also enriches the region's agricultural diversity. This diversity provides economic stability to farmers and ensures that the land remains fertile and productive.

The coffee harvest takes place from October to December, a period of intense activity and community collaboration. During this period, farmers work tirelessly to ensure that only the best coffee cherries are harvested and processed, maintaining the high standards for which Kiamutuira is renowned.
