Kabare Karani Farm is located in the heart of Kenya’s Kirinyaga Province, one of the most renowned regions for producing premium coffee. The area lies on the slopes of Mount Kenya, Africa’s second highest mountain. With its high altitude of between 1,600 and 1,800 meters above sea level, the location has ideal climatic conditions for growing quality coffee beans. The mineral-rich volcanic soil, along with ample sunshine and regular rainfall, provides the perfect environment for coffee to grow, with the distinct acidity and complex flavor that is typical of the area.
Karani factory was built in 1998 and bears the name of its first owner. The area in which the farm is located is very fertile for many agricultural crops and is irrigated by a perfect irrigation scheme leading from Mt. Kenya, which supplies clean water enriched with minerals.
The cherries are sorted by hand before being peeled. The peeled cherries in the parchment are then fermented overnight in tanks for approximately 16-24 hours. After fermentation, the parchment is washed, sorted and finally dried on raised beds, which takes 9 to 15 days.
The farm's chairman, Robinson Thiaka, is working hard to improve the quality and quantity of the coffee. Most farmers use cherry pulp and cow manure to make organic fertilizer.
