Coffee cultivation in Indonesia dates back to the late 17th century, during the Dutch colonization, and has played a key role in the country's growth ever since. Today, more than 300 years later, Indonesia is one of the world's largest coffee producers, growing both Arabica and so robust. Most coffee production is carried out by smallholder farmers, who typically cultivate less than two hectares of land. Consisting of approximately 18,000 islands, Indonesia has ten main islands that have become major coffee growing regions, each offering a unique microclimate and terroir.
Sumatra, Indonesia’s westernmost island, lies on the equator and is known for its stunning landscapes and diverse fauna. Central Sumatra, particularly the area around Kerinci Seblat National Park, is a hub for exceptional coffee production. The area boasts lush tropical rainforests and is one of the last refuges for the critically endangered Sumatran tiger. The landscape is dominated by Mount Kerinci, Indonesia’s highest volcano, rising to 3,800 metres. The fertile volcanic soil and high altitudes of the Kerinci highlands provide ideal conditions for growing coffee. The Camintoran Cooperative, which has 162 members, is one of these smallholder farmer groups in the area. This micro-lot, containing the S-Lini and Caturra varieties, is produced by farmers from the villages of Palompek, Solok and Bengkolan Dua. The coffee cherries are hand-picked, pitted and dried in their skins with the remaining mucilage, a process known as “honey.” Unlike the wet shelling commonly used in Sumatra, these beans are dry shelled, which yields a distinct flavor profile.
