In the new year 2025, you can look forward to naturally processed coffee from Daniel Alemayehu, whose farm is located at an altitude of 2100m above sea level in the Gedeb area (Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia). We went to personally select this coffee with Daniel and his very nice and large family. The farm focuses only on natural processing and the main varieties include Kurume and 74110. The coffee grows in the shade of fake banana trees, the cherries are beautifully large, healthy, sweet and juicy. Daniel, his family and workers do a really great job, they pick the cherries at the right moment, they sort the entire production (approx. 12 tons) by hand, and thanks to this you will be able to enjoy this unique coffee here in Europe.

Daniel Mijua's Legacy and Alemayehu Daniel's Farm

The year was 1961 when a young Ethiopian man left his home in the Sidamo region to seek his fortune in the lush countryside around Worka Chalbes, near Gedeb. Daniel Miju, then still single, established his farm there, growing coffee and false banana (ensete), a traditional crop of the region.

He soon found a wife, and in keeping with the cultural customs of his people, he married twice more over the years. Daniel became the father of a large family—he fathered thirteen sons and ten daughters—and lived to a ripe old age. He eventually bequeathed his land to his sons, among them Alemaye Daniel.

One of Alemayehu’s main motivations for his work is to preserve his father’s legacy. The original farm was divided between the brothers, each receiving more than 10 hectares of land. It is here – on fertile, well-irrigated soil, sheltered by the shade of massive indigenous trees – that Alemayehu grows some of the finest coffees you can find in the Gedeb region.

When Daniel Miju distributed his estate, he gave each son not only a piece of land but also coffee seedlings – the foundation of future farms. Alemayeho’s production comes from these plants.

However, the family bond did not end with the division of the land. The brothers help each other – not only in the cultivation, but especially in critical stages, such as drying the coffee cherries after the harvest. They regularly take turns guarding and caring for the harvest, because they know that the quality of the coffee is created in every detail.

Alemayehu Daniel Farm

During the harvest season, Alemayehu Daniel employs around 40 to 60 workers to ensure that the cherries are picked at the right stage of ripeness and without unnecessary delays. After harvesting, the cherries travel to the washing station, where he personally oversees the cleaning and washing process with the utmost care and precision. Once the cherries are dried, he transports them to the town of Gedeb.

While Alemayeha's coffee used to be marketed through a growers' association, he now exports independently - he has obtained his own export license. This is his second year as an independent exporter. His efforts have also been recognized at the national level - he has received several awards from Ethiopian authorities for the exceptional quality of his coffee.

Better price, better life

Harvest is a financially and logistically demanding period for Alemayehu – he pays a significant portion of his funds to seasonal workers, invests in transporting the coffee to Gedeb, its processing, and subsequent transfer to Addis Ababa, from where the taste of his coffee is spread around the world.

Thanks to the higher purchase price that direct export and sales on the international market allow him to, Alemayehu can invest in essential equipment – such as a generator or lighting – and gradually improve not only his own standard of living, but also that of his entire family.
