🏞️ Region and Terroir

Nyabirongo Natural coffee originates from the Rwenzori Mountains, often called the "Mountains of the Moon." This dramatic mountain range lies on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and is among the most remarkable landscapes in all of Africa. Steep slopes, frequent rains, mists, and rich volcanic soils create exceptionally favorable conditions for growing Arabica.

Coffee trees grow on small family farms scattered across the mountain slopes at altitudes ranging from 1,300 to over 2,000 meters. At higher elevations, cherries ripen slowly, which promotes higher bean density, intense sweetness, and a richer flavor profile.

Rwenzori is currently one of Uganda's most intriguing terroirs. It combines African fruitiness with a deeper chocolate sweetness and an exceptionally clean expression.

🌍 Uganda – A New Voice in East African Specialty Coffee

Although Uganda has long been known primarily for robusta production, mountainous regions like Rwenzori show that the country also has enormous potential for high-quality Arabica. In recent years, investments in processing, farmer training, and transparent trade have led to the emergence of coffees that are gaining attention from roasters worldwide.

The SL14 and SL28 varieties, originally bred in Kenya, have adapted exceptionally well to the Ugandan mountains. They offer a combination of distinct fruitiness, vibrant acidity, and a sweet, full body.

👨🌾 Farming Community

Nyabirongo is not a single farm, but a collaborative project of hundreds of small-scale producers who cultivate land parcels of approximately 1–2 hectares. Coffee is the primary source of livelihood for most families.

Farmers traditionally grow coffee under the shade of banana trees, avocados, and indigenous trees. Cherries are hand-picked and delivered to collection centers, from where they are transported to the central station in Nyabirongo.

🤝 Agri Evolve – Coffee as a Development Tool

Agri Evolve is a social enterprise founded with the goal of improving the living conditions of Ugandan farmers through higher quality coffee production. The organization provides:

  • agronomic advice,
  • training in proper agricultural practices,
  • harvesting and sorting support,
  • access to modern processing,
  • transparent and fair trade.

The "profit for purpose" model means that the economic success of the project is directly linked to the long-term development of local communities.

🏭 Nyabirongo Processing Station

The station is located near the town of Kisinga and serves as a central point for receiving, sorting, and drying cherries. Consistent quality can be achieved even with coffee sourced from hundreds of small-scale producers due to standardized processing.

Coffee is meticulously monitored from the farmer to the export lot, ensuring a high degree of traceability and transparency.

⚙️ Natural Process

The natural process in Nyabirongo is conducted with exceptional precision to develop sweetness and fruitiness while maintaining cup clarity.

Step by step

Selective Harvesting
Only fully ripe, dark red cherries are picked.

Flotation and Sorting
Cherries are submerged in water to remove light and defective fruits.

Anaerobic Underwater Pre-fermentation
Selected cherries ferment for 48–72 hours under controlled conditions, enhancing fruity and floral notes.

Slow Drying on African Beds
Cherries are dried for 20–30 days, regularly turned, and protected from rain and night humidity.

Stabilization and Export
After reaching target moisture, the coffee rests, then is hulled, sorted, and prepared for export.
